How to Edit or Change Your Airpods Name
AirPods are becoming more popular by the day. Pretty soon you won’t be able to walk into a Genius Bar without running into a dozen other people using them. Now, that’s not a bad thing but it can become awkward if you’re trying to find your AirPods in an overcrowded list of Bluetooth devices all called “AirPods”.
Luckily, AirPods can easily be renamed to whatever you choose. It’s a good way to avoid confusion with other owners. You’ll never be left wondering if you grabbed someone else’s by mistake or vice versa. Below, you’ll find instructions for changing the name of your AirPods and a few other useful tips.
Name Change and Other Settings
AirPods are easy to customize. Changing the name is just the beginning. You can also change the double-tap commands, Automatic Ear Detection, and other features as well. And whilst it’s outside of the scope of this article to go through all those options, you’ll find them in the same menu where you’ll perform the name change.
First, make sure your AirPods are charged and close to the device they’re paired with. Open the case and access the settings on your iPhone or iPad.
Go to your Bluetooth settings and find your AirPods on the list of paired devices. Tap on the information icon that looks like a lowercase “i” in a circle next to the name. This will display the settings menu for your AirPods.
The third option on that screen will be the name of the Pods themselves. Tap where it says “Name” and you’ll be transferred to another screen. The default name will be <Your Name’s> AirPods so tap on that field and you’ll be prompted to type in a new name. When you’re done typing, tap the “Done” button on the keyboard.
That’s it! You’ve renamed your AirPods. Now, if you’re like us, and you’re having trouble coming up with that perfect name, you can use this website to find some great suggestions.
AirPod Name Changing Back
Some users report a strange issue when they’re trying to rename their AirPods to the plain name “AirPods” along with a few other specific names. A complete list of problem names isn’t available but if you’re having this issue, know that you’re not alone.
It seems that every time they rename their Pods and then put them back in the case, the name reverts to the default name scheme from Apple. In the same way, the name reverts back when the AirPods are switched to another device.
This is a very unusual problem and Apple has very little information about why it happens. If you’re having this problem, try to unpair the earphones, rest, and then re-pair them. You can do that through the very same settings menu you accessed to change the name. Tap on “Forget This Device” then hold down the button on the back of the AirPods case until the status light turns amber and then white.
Re-pair the AirPods and try renaming them again. If this doesn’t fix your issue, try updating your firmware on all your devices.
If the problem still persists, try renaming your AirPods to the desired name and place a blank space at the end. The blank space won’t show up on the list of devices but has been shown to be an effective workaround.
Change the Name from Windows
If you want to change the name on your Windows PC, you can do that too. You’ll just be changing the name as if the Pods were any other Bluetooth device.
Start by placing the AirPods near the PC that you’re using and open the charging case. Press and hold the button on the back of the case until the status light turns white and then release the button. That will set the AirPods to pairing mode.
Pair them with the PC and then access the Control Panel by typing “Control Panel” into your system search bar and selecting the first option. Click on “Hardware and Sound” in the Control panel and then “Devices and Printers” in the following window.
Now you’ll be presented with all the peripherals connected to the computer. Find the AirPods and right-click their icon. From the drop-down menu that appears, select “Properties”. In the “Bluetooth” tab of the Properties menu, you’ll have a field where you can enter a new name for the device. Enter the name and click on “Apply” at the bottom.
That should do it. Your AirPods are renamed; you can close your charging case.
What’s in a Name?
Renaming your AirPods is a very simple procedure. It’s also encouraged because it will make your life easier in many ways. Don’t feel the need to be too clever with the name, as long as it stands out, that’s good enough.
All you have to do is access the settings app on your iOS device and find the Bluetooth devices. Find your AirPods from among the devices and tap on it. Tap on the name of your AirPods in that menu and just type in a new name. It’s that easy. Never get your AirPods mixed up again!
