The Best Offline Shooting Games—No Wi-Fi Required! [July 2020]

After years of waiting, Borderlands 3 finally arrived late last year, to the thrill of all fans of lootin’ and shootin’. For those who loved the original, the gameplay returns here in full form, with more than a billion unique guns, a ton of loot to find with each enemy, and all of the RPG elements Borderlands fans know and crave. This time, you play as one of four Vault Hunters, who aim to stop cult-leading twins Troy and Tyreen Calypso, as they attempt to harness the power of every Vault spread throughout the galaxy.

“Can it run Crysis?” might be a dead meme in 2020, but that hasn’t stopped the series from being a beloved FPS trilogy. Although Crysis 3 was first released in 2013, it remains a game nearly unparalleled in graphical capability, especially on console. The final chapter in the trilogy, Crysis 3 finds you in an apocalyptic New York City in 2047  on a revenge mission against CELL, having finally uncovered the truth behind their motives for building the nanodomes that have cursed you throughout the entire trilogy.

Crysis 3 is available on Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.  If you’re on PS4, Xbox One or Switch and you’re trying to get into the series for the first time, keep your eyes out for Crysis Remastered, coming out later in 2020.

In this sequel to the critically-acclaimed Doom reboot, Doom Eternal, you’ll find yourself fighting back against all-new hordes of demons and terrifying monsters. The game picks up after the events of the 2016 game, with the Doom Slayer on a mission to end Hell’s consumption of Earth once and for all. Doom Eternal is designed to be played fast and to reward players for smart thinking and strategizing,  which makes for an immensely satisfying experience to play. We’ve already recommended Doom Eternal as a fantastic way to get some offline FPS action going, but if you’re more of a fan of the original style of 90s Doom, you absolutely need to check out Dusk, a game that brings the style and feel of early FPS games with a ton of extra modern flair. With a splash of Lovecraftian horror, you’ll be tasked with escaping each level by reaching the exit, all while possessed soldiers, demonic livestock, and cultists try to kill you first. The game’s level design has been praised from critics and users alike, and the game is generally considered a great return for anyone missing old-school Doom.

Dusk is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux via Steam. It’s slated to arrive on Switch this October.

Considered one of the best games in the long running series, it’s a great time to try out a Far Cry game before Far Cry 6 arrives in 2021. The game takes place in a fictional Himalayan country and follows Ajay Ghale, a young Kyrati-American who finds himself caught in a civil war. As you make your way through battle, you’ll have to deal with soldiers and wildlife alike. A branching storyline makes multiple playthroughs truly rewarding, and it’s available for just a few dollars on most platforms.

Although the first two Halo games made appearances on PC, Halo: The Master Chief Collection marks the first time that gamers on both Xbox and Windows 10 have been able to play the entire series (with the exception of Halo 5: Guardians). Whether you’re playing the original Combat Evolved, acclaimed sequels Halo 2 and Halo 3, or Halo Reach, The Master Chief Collection has a huge list of games for you to play for just a single price.

Metro Exodus is the newest and latest game in the Metro series, all of which are based on Dmitry Glukhovsky’s novel series of the same name. Considering the depth of each Metro story, there’s an argument to be made that Exodus is the wrong place to start, but in our eyes, we disagree. As a story-focused survival FPS, Metro Exodus is unlike any other game on this list, and this entry in the series expands into an open-world adventure.

Metro Exodus is available on Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. If you’re interested in jumping into the series from the start, the first two games in the series, Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light, are both available remastered in the Metro Redux package, available on Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Switch.

One of the hottest—no pun intended—indie games of the last five years, SUPERHOT is a first-person shooter unlike any other. The game follows a pretty simple set of rules: time only moves when you move, which means you’ll need to plan every single step in order to make your way through a level. Complete with a fantastic low-poly design aesthetic and a fascinating story of mind control, SUPERHOT is a guaranteed joy. A sequel, SUPERHOT: Mind Control Delete, comes out soon, and owners of the original can score themselves a free copy for a limited time.

Titanfall 2 wasn’t a sales success, but it’s known as one of the best campaigns in any first-person shooter ever released. That’s for your benefit, of course. The game is often sold for just a few bucks, and has been given away on PlayStation for Plus members. Despite being a sequel, Titanfall 2 is an original story, the first campaign set in the Titanfall universe after a campaign-less original game. The game follows the story of Jack Cooper, who bonds with his mentor’s Titan unit after being lost in action. Together, the two embark on a quest to stop an evil corporation from launching a superweapon set to destroy the planet Harmony.

Who would’ve thought that a quasi-sequel to 2009’s failed reboot of Wolfenstein would find itself hailed as one of the best first-person shooters of the 2010s. Wolfenstein: The New Order follows William “B.J.” Blazkowicz as he fights against Nazis through Europe, attempting to stop them from ruling over the world.
