Samsung Gear Live Review

The Samsung Gear Live was the fifth smartwatch released by Samsung and is the first Samsung smartwatch to work with other devices besides those from Samsung itself like the range of Galaxy smartphones and tablets. The Samsung Gear Live was one of the first wearable devices to run the new Android Wear software that is still going through some updates when the Samsung Gear Live was released.

Design & Display

The design of the new Samsung Gear Live resembles the previous Gears model and only has one button on the side to activate Google voice and functions as the power button as well. The Samsung Gear Live has a metal body and has limited features compared to other smart watches on the market. There are no cameras, on screens that allow you to make calls or watch videos.

It features a square 1.63-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 320 x 320 creating a strong 278 pixels-per-inch. The touchscreen illuminates with the tap of a finger or when the device is rotated. These specs and designs are very similar to the Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo and Galaxy Gear. The Samsung Gear Live has 512MB of RAM and an additional 4GB of replaceable internal storage. Also, features a 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 processor and has a weight of 2.1 oz. or 59g.

The overall feel of the Samsung Gear Live is more premium than it’s competitors of Fitbit Flex and Fitbit Force, but that comes at a more expensive price for the Gear Live. The Gear Live does have some more features than the Fitbit models, but the price of $200, £170 or AU$250.

Pros

  • Heart rate monitor
  • Includes Android Wear
  • More modern than G Watch
  • Can use Facebook and other Apps with it

Cons

  •  Terrible battery life
  • Needs software updates
  • Hard to fasten clasp
  • Similar design as previous models

Overall, the Samsung Gear Live is a nice improvement compared to the previous models by Samsung, but nothing special to make you really want to purchase it. The price is extremely expensive for the functionally compared to other similar devices in the market. The short battery life and hard to fasten clasp are main negatives for this smartwatch. But with Android Wear software and heart rate monitor, this can be a very useful device for those needing a device than keep up with your active lifestyle.
