How to Add Philo to Samsung TV

Gone are the days when you endlessly sift through channels to find the program that catches your fancy. Now, not only are the cable operators more attuned to the demand of the customers, but viewers themselves are very precise about what they want to watch. In this age of Smart TVs and pay-per-view curation, it’s up to us to decide what subscriptions and services we sign up for.

That’s where a service like Philo comes in with its handpicked entertainment and lifestyle channels. Is it a thing an entire family can happily get behind?

Setting Up Philo on Your Samsung TV

Now that you’ve probably made up your mind about using Philo on your Samsung Smart TV (or any other Android TV for that matter), it’s time to find out how to set it up.

Follow the simple steps described below to gain access to the treasure trove of entertainment that Philo has in store for you.

Philo to Samsung TV
  1. Switch on your TV and go to the Samsung TV Home screen. Once there, scroll down to the Apps row.
  2. Click on the Google Play Store app.
  3. We assume you’ve already logged in to the Google Play Store earlier. In case you haven’t, enter your Google account details and log in.
  4. Once on the Google Play Store page, look for the search icon in the top-left corner. It looks like a magnifying glass. Type the word Philo in the search bar and select the app from the results.
  5. Click Install.
  6. Once it’s installed, simply login to your philo account and you’re all set.

Where Is Philo Available?

Now, let’s examine Philo a bit closer. Let’s see where you can watch it.

Since its launch nearly ten years ago, Philo has come a long way. Boasting a great selection of channels, Philo has seen a steady increase in the number of subscribers despite heavy competition. While the giants like YouTube TV and Hulu + Live TV have a plethora of channels in their catalogs, Philo created quite a niche audience for itself with a head-start in entertainment programming.

Philo was initially available only on Roku devices. It was a test run designed by its creators to see if the internet television company can play on level ground with its competitors. As it turned out, Philo couldn’t only do that, but it also siphoned off a few customers already subscribed to the more prominent live TV streaming companies.

Owing to Philo’s early success, its creators decided it was time to enter the mainstream. Since then, Philo has become available on a whole host of other devices, including ones powered by Android, iOS, and Windows.

There Are a Few Caveats

However, some still have reservations about Philo. Most of them stem from the fact that Philo is not necessarily designed to be your only source of TV programming. Lacking sports channels or even local ones, Philo doesn’t have much to offer when it comes to the average consumer. It is especially true if you don’t plan on using Philo in conjunction with other streaming services or mainstream cable TV operators.

Even so, many see Philo as a supplement to other services they’ve already subscribed to. For a subscription fee of only $20 per month, that’s something definitely for you to consider.

If you’re willing to navigate these problems, Philo is more than worth a try. With channels like BBC America, Comedy Central, History Channel, MTV, and many others to boot, Philo still seems to have what it takes to become your family’s preferred destination for quality TV entertainment.

There are other benefits of using Philo if you own an Android TV. Not only can you record shows and programs you’re likely to miss, but you can also watch Philo on three separate devices at a single time. So even if your family members each want to see a different channel all at the same time, the great news is that Philo has you covered!

If You’re Still Unsure, Go for the Seven-Day Free Trial

Philo also offers a seven-day free trial that will help you make up your mind. You have to enter your credit card details and cancel the subscription before the end of the billing date if you’re not satisfied with the service. You won’t be charged if you cancel before the billing date.

So what are you waiting for? Go check out the Philo app on your Samsung TV and see if your family likes it.

If you’re already a Philo subscriber, we’d love to hear from you. So if you’re satisfied with what Philo has to offer, or if you’re disgruntled by it, please make sure to tell us your thoughts in the comments section below.

I would love to have Philo on my Samsung Smart TV. I just bought UT a month ago. When I type in Philo it says no results. So I’d like to know why Samsung doesn’t have access to the app. Please help.
Terrie says:
I tried to run Philo on my Samsung smart TV (purchased new in February 2021). I was able to get the account set up but the shows will not play, it locks up. Very frustrating. Will not buy another Samsung TV.
Al says:
You can’t download directly to the TV but if you have a Roku or Firestick you can run it through that device

I went to internet on my samsung smart tv. Searched for play store, searched for philo, hit install. Philo was installed on my phone, not my tv.
Leah Alsanders says:
I had to put a firs stick on my Samsung TV because you can’t even get Philo to play over the internet because you can’t download Chrome or Firefox
Rachel says:
This doesn’t work. As in every other comment this is not able to be added. I would really like to know which Samsung TV does allow it because I just bought mine and while it has the Google play movies & tv it is NOT the same. I think this is the incorrect information to provide if it doesn’t work on anything as advertised.
Deb says:
Yeah, same here. Brand new (bought in Oct. 2020) Samsung Series 7 TV. Maybe only works on older models
brian Kim says:
Does not work. When I search Philo in Google Play only TV shows and movie choices show up as results. There is no Philo to choice and no install button as well.
WitchyJen79 says:
Ya, sorry but there isn’t a PlayStore, just the Play Movies and Tv app, YouTube, hulu, Netflix, and a plethora of unusable apps that mostly stream indie content or something else foreign or even more unusual or weird.
I wish I could download this! I don’t get it though, I bought these tv’s in ’16 and that’s literally the last time it had an update even though it’s set up for automatic updates for the Samsung Apps.
Jared says:
This does not work. Our Samsung Smart TV does not have the Google Play Store on it.
Amy K says:
I purchased my Samsung tv in February 2020, this does not work. Google play is not the same as the android app. I think Samsung is barring Philo from it….big bummer. Just remember, Google owns YouTube and wants to stop their competitors.
Francesca says:
Did not Work for my brand new Samsung Smart Tv. There Is No Down load Button
Bill says:
I bought my Samsung TVs in November 2019. This procedure does not work. Google play store is not found. Using the magnifying glass “search” option does not produce it either. I appreciate you are trying to help people, but unfortunately this doesn’t work.
webbrrewers says:
I think the author forgot to mention this only works on later versions of the Samsung Smart platform. My tv is circa 2015 and I can’t get Philo or the app store either. It seems you can’t update the platform which is a big muss.
Kevin Johnson says:
tried following your steps but in the google play search philo does not show when you search for it.
