Do Amazon Smart Plugs Work with Google Home?

Amazon Smart Plugs offer a lot of variety and flexibility in their use. However, they’re not all flexible when it comes to other smart home systems other than Amazon’s. Unfortunately, Amazon Smart Plugs don’t work with Google Home.

There’s no workaround to this, straight up, they won’t work with the Google Assistant or any other smart assistant. They only recognize Alexa and Amazon smart devices such as the Amazon Echo. You can only use these plugs with the Alexa app and none other.

Read on for more information and some good alternatives to Amazon Smart Plugs.

What Makes Amazon Smart Plugs Great

Amazon Smart Plugs are amazing, but there’s a catch. They only work in the Amazon smart home ecosystem, and that’s a bummer. Anyone who has a Google Home or any other smart home platform is not going to like this.

Amazon users will be content though because the integration of these smart plugs with other Amazon products is just on point. You use the Alexa app for the setup, and later on you do everything through Alexa.

Some Amazon Echo devices are quite inexpensive and combined with the Amazon Smart Plugs, they can make your entire household smart. A smart plug is a device that makes a “dumb” device into a smart one, which can be voice-activated.

Amazon isn’t the first to develop such a product, and some argue that their smart plugs aren’t the best on the market. Their price is decent, it isn’t cheap but it isn’t expensive either. These are actually less costly than most other smart plugs.

If you don’t want to make a switch to an Amazon ecosystem, with all Amazon products, don’t worry. You can get many other smart plugs working with Google Home. Read on for a list of best alternative smart plug devices currently available.

Alternatives That Work with Google Home

If you thought that smart plugs are mostly made for Amazon smart homes, you’re wrong. There are many brands of smart plugs that work both with Google Home and Amazon Echo. They don’t care if you’re using Google’s trusty Assistant or Amazon’s lady Alexa.

Here are some of the best alternatives, taking everything into account (flexibility, price, functionality).

D-Link Smart Plug

The D-Link Smart Plug is a device that works with Amazon Echo and Google Home alike. It has an app of its own that controls any devices you plug into this smart plug. Furthermore, you can use Google Assistant voice commands for maximum efficiency.

You can download the D-Link app from the official website. It is available on the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, and even the Windows Store. All the download links are available on their site. The app is totally free and lets you control your smart home.

A great thing about this app is that it works on smartphones and tablets. There’s also a lite version that is more compact. The price of the D-Link Smart Plug is the same as the Amazon Smart Plug.

TP-Link Kasa Smart Wi-Fi Plug

The TP-Link Kasa Smart Wi-Fi Plug is very practical because it has two outlets. This means that you can control two different devices using your Google Home. It doesn’t require a hub, which is great. This is due to the Wi-Fi technology that is already a part of this smart plug.

You would expect that this device is expensive, but it has nearly the same price as the Amazon Smart Plug. Use the official Kasa app to install and use this great smart device. It plays along nicely with the Google Home, don’t worry.

This app is free for iOS and Android devices. The TP-Link Kasa Smart Wi-Fi Plug is very compact and it will fit anywhere.

AUKEY Wi-Fi Smart Plug

AUKEY offers a very cheap alternative to the Amazon Smart Plug. You get it in a duo pack, for the same price as a single Amazon Smart Plug. Also, it works well with Google Assistant and doesn’t take any subscription services.

Also, you won’t need a hub for it to work, because it has built-in Wi-Fi. It is very compact and offers great value for money.

The AUKEY app is available on the App Store and Google Play Store. Admittedly, the app isn’t as smooth as the competition, but this product isn’t that popular and doesn’t have a powerhouse brand like Amazon.

TP-Link Kasa Smart Power Strip

Besides the Wi-Fi plug, TP-Link also offers a power strip. This is like six smart plugs combined because that’s how many devices this strip can control. That sounds too good to be true, it must be expensive. Actually, considering its versatility and usefulness, it isn’t that expensive.

Yes, it works with Google Home, and once again you will need the Kasa app, which is very smooth. This also has surge protection which is great. Finally, it has three additional USB ports for charging multiple devices at the same time.

Smart Home Plugs

It’s very unfortunate that Amazon still doesn’t offer any integration of its smart plugs with the Google Home. Maybe in the future they will consider implementing it. For now, you’ll have to satisfy with the alternatives.
