How To Find the Best Spotify Channels and Playlists

You don’t need me to tell you how cool Spotify is or how it can seriously widen your music repertoire or even change your tastes. For now, Spotify is the best way to discover new music, explore different genre or just listen to music. If you need a little help finding the best Spotify channels and playlists, this post is for you.

A Spotify playlist is a curated list of tracks. It has been put together by Spotify themselves or by users. They are usually sorted by genre so can be selected to suit your mood. Not only do they provide a great way to listen to hours’ worth of music at once, they save you the hours it would take to find all the tracks yourself from the millions that are on the platform.

Here are a few tips to find the best Spotify playlists.

Discover Weekly

The very first thing you should do is subscribe to the Discover Weekly playlist. Released every Monday, it is a curated playlist produced by Spotify themselves. It includes two hours of music created from your most recent listening habits. It will also include other tracks from similar bands or artists and some from other people with similar tastes to yours have been listening to.

Discover Weekly is a very accomplished feature. It takes your own listening data and compiles it with others who listen to the same kinds of music. It then creates a new playlist that combines those two and adds a few new releases to build the playlist.

Just be aware that the Discover Weekly playlist only lasts the week so if you get a particularly good one, save it manually or it will be gone forever!

Follow friends

If you have some friends that use Spotify and have decent taste in music, you can always see what they are listening to. Sometimes you will find guilty pleasures, sometimes you won’t like what you find, but occasionally you might find a playlist you really like.

If you use the Find Friends section of Spotify, you can connect using whatever means you like and see what they are listening to.

You can also create a joint playlist if you really do like the same tunes. Create a playlist in the normal way and then right click it and select ‘Collaborative Playlist’. Send the link to your friends and build it together.

Use The Playlist Miner

The Playlist Miner is a third party app that collects data on popular public playlists and the music you listen to. It can then use that data to build playlists according to what you listen to or search for. It uses its own search engine to produce some pretty good lists featuring everything from industrial to dance.

Data is obviously a big part of how Spotify and The Playlist Miner work and you can use that to your advantage. For example, type ‘relax’ into The Playlist Miner search box and it will build a 100 track playlist of the most popular relaxing music. It will do the same for most search terms.

The Daily Mix

Introduced late last year, the Daily Mix is a playlist of music you have already listened to in your Spotify history. So rather than discovering new music, you get to enjoy stuff you have already listened to since you began using the streaming service. The Daily Mix is obviously much more effective if you have used Spotify for a while but can also be useful if you’re new to it.

According to Spotify, over 40 million users regularly use the Daily Mix feature. There is a comforting familiarity in listening to music you already know rather than constantly discovering new tracks. If you’re feeling nostalgic or just want that comfort, the Daily Mix is worth a shot.

Public playlists

If you have the time and patience, public playlists are a useful way of discovering new artists and tracks. By clever use of the search function, you can find shared playlists that offer just the kind of music you’re looking for.

Just access the playlist function and use search. Don’t just say ‘rap’ or ‘rock’ but be more specific. Use terms like ‘80s rap’ or ‘hairspray rock’, ‘gangster movie soundtracks’ or ‘rock guitar solos’. You get the idea. The more specific you can make your search, the more fruitful it will be. You can almost guarantee that there will be a playlist out there to cover it.
