May the 4th Be With You: The Best Star Wars Games of All Time
6. Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast (2002)
Platforms: Windows, OS X, GameCube, Xbox
The entire Dark Forces series is excellent, but Jedi Outcast is where the series really hit its stride. A first- and third-person action game, the player takes control of mercenary-turned-troubled-Jedi Kyle Katarn as he is forced to battle the combined forces of the Empire and a Dark Jedi cult. The graphics look great, even today, and the player has access to a variety of weapons, including lightsabers (which can be used to dismember foes), blasters, and Force powers. An engrossing and well-told story is icing on the cake, but the real gem is the multiplayer. Friends can join battle on either the Light or Dark sides of the Force, with each gaining access to unique Force abilities, and the third-person lightsaber combat is surprisingly competent and fun. Even if you’re not a Star Wars fan, Jedi Outcast is worth checking out for the innovative gameplay alone.
