May the 4th Be With You: The Best Star Wars Games of All Time
5. Super Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1993)
Platform: SNES
The Super Star Wars series took the platform concepts of the NES Star Wars games and threw the advanced power and capabilities of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System at them. Just like the films, however, the best of the games was Super Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. Players controlled multiple characters as the game mirrored and expanded upon the events of the film, with each character possessing a special ability, such as the Force for Luke and an improved blaster for Han. Like all Super Star Wars games, there were also several levels which showed off Mode 7, the SNES’s simulated 3D feature. Perhaps most importantly, however, was the introduction of a password-based save system, which let players who reached a certain point in the game restart from that level without having to return to the beginning. The concepts of Super Star Wars were mostly familiar, but the improved graphics and sound made a huge difference.
