How to Change Batteries on a Leapfrog Discovery Ball

The Leapfrog Discovery Ball introduces toddlers to letters and phonics and can help them to develop motor skills. Your child can press a letter to hear the name of the letter, or simply spin or roll the ball to hear the alphabet song. The ball also includes three other melodies for your child to enjoy, as well as twinkling lights that flash to the beat.

It requires three AA batteries, which are included in the package. It can be tricky to figure out how to put in the batteries, so even if you’ve done it before, you might have forgotten when it comes time to change the batteries.

Changing the Batteries

You could safely say that changing batteries on a Leapfrog Discovery Ball is a bit more complicated than with most other toys. This is because the battery chamber is hidden inside the toy. The good news is that it’s easy enough if you know where to look:

Step 1

Before you begin, you’re going to need these:

  1. A small Phillips screwdriver
  2. A coin
  3. Three new AA batteries

Step 2

Locate the parent safety latch on the base of the Leapfrog and slide it to the down position. The safety latch is located to the side of the base, directly below the release button.

Step 3

Also on the base is a release button. Press it and the Discovery Ball should come off the base. This will allow you to access the battery door.

Step 4

Find the small dial located at the end of the Discovery Ball (the slightly recessed part). Now you need to insert the coin into the dial. Turn counterclockwise to unlock the dial.

Step 5

As you hold the ball in both hands, twist the sides in opposite directions and pull the blue part away. This will separate the blue side from the white piece in the center.

Step 6

The battery compartment is in the white part of the ball. Locate the rectangular battery door and use the screwdriver to remove the two screws that keep the door on. Remove and safely dispose of the old batteries (if any) and put the new ones in.

Note: If you can’t tell from the terminals, look on the inside of the battery compartment for a diagram that indicates how to align the battery terminals.

Step 7

Place the battery door back and then the screws. Retrieve the blue part of the ball and push it back onto the white. Twist the sides to reassemble the ball.

Step 8

Finally, place the ball back onto the base. Check if the safety latch is in the down position. Make sure that the ball’s caps are aligned properly with the inside arms of the base. Move the parent safety latch to the up position and you’re done!

Leapfrog Discovery Ball: Overview of Features

This product measures 7.1 x 8 x 10.3 inches and 2.38 pounds. The manufacturer recommends this toy for children that are between 6 months and 5 years old.

The ball can spin on its base or you can take it off for roll-around play. This can help your baby to develop critical motor skills. The Discovery Ball plays the ABC song and features two exciting learning modes, relaxing instrumental music, and stimulating colors and twinkling lights.

If you’re looking to put the Discovery Ball away for a longer period of time, it’s recommended to first remove the batteries. If you don’t know by now: the batteries should only be removed by an adult.

C Is for Conclusion

The Leapfrog Discovery Ball engages your toddler’s senses with music, sounds, and lights. On the other hand, changing the batteries engages your skills and puts your patience to the test. It’s one of those rare toys that can benefit both toddlers and parents!
