How to Change the Language in Netflix on an Android Device
Thanks to the many streaming platforms available today, it’s never been easier to access thousands of hours of entertainment. One of the most popular such platforms is Netflix. With an enormous catalogue of movies, TV shows, and documentaries, they also offer a lot of their own original titles as well.
Present on a global scale, Netflix is also available in many languages. With English set as a default language, it may be that you want to change that for your Netflix app. To do so, follow the instructions in the section below.
Changing the App’s Default Language
Before you start, please make sure you’ve created your Netflix account and that you have the latest version of the app. To check if there are any recent updates, check the app’s page on Google Play. Once you’re set, you can proceed to change the language.
- Open the Netflix app on your smartphone.
- Tap your Netflix profile for which you want to change the default language.
- In the Netflix main screen, tap the menu button in the bottom right corner (three horizontal lines).
- Tap “Account”.
- Scroll down to the “My Profile” section.
- Tap “Language”.
- Choose your preferred language from the list by tapping the radio button next to it.
- Tap “Save” to change the default Netflix language.
- If everything went OK, you should see the “Language saved” notification pop up.
Now that you’ve changed the app’s default language, Netflix will offer relevant languages for both subtitle and audio as well.
Changing the Subtitle Language
With many subtitle languages to choose from, follow the next few steps to choose your preferred one:
- Open the Netflix app and select your profile to sign in.
- Play a movie or a TV show you want to watch.
- When the playback starts, tap anywhere on the screen.
- Tap the “Dialogue” button. That’s the one that looks like a speech bubble.
- Select your preferred subtitle language from the list.
- Tap “OK” to confirm the changes.
- The subtitle you just chose should now appear on the screen.
Since subtitles are available in a lot of different languages, to make things convenient, Netflix shows only up to seven languages that are most relevant to you. If you can’t see your preferred language, make sure that you’ve changed the app’s default language, as described in the previous section. Netflix algorithm decides which subtitle options you’ll get, based on your main language and your current location.
If subtitles are still not available in your preferred language, it maybe they haven’t been translated yet. If that is the case, there are no guarantees they’ll come any time soon.
Changing the Audio Language
Same as when you want to change the subtitle language, audio options appear in the “Dialogue” menu as well. Simply follow steps 1 through 4 from the previous section to see which languages are available for audio. When you see your preferred language, tap it to select it. After that, tap “OK” to save the audio settings.
It may happen that you need to set the audio to your preferred language every time you play a title. This usually happens if you’re playing kid-rated movies or TV shows. In that case, simply play a title with a teen rating or above to set the audio language to your liking.
Of course, just as with the subtitles, if you can’t find the audio language you want, it’s possible that Netflix doesn’t provide that language just yet.
Changing the Download Location
Netflix also lets you download movies and TV shows directly to your Android device. If you have limited space in your internal storage memory, you might want to avoid overloading that portion of your device with Netflix downloads. In that case, you can use your internal SD card for this purpose.
To change the download location for your Netflix content, follow these steps:
- In your Netflix Android app, tap the “Menu” button in the bottom right corner.
- Tap “App Settings”.
- In the “Downloads” section, tap “Download Location”.
- In the next screen, select your SD card as the new download location.
- Return to the main screen.
Now that you’ve directed Netflix downloads to your SD card, you won’t have to worry about running out of your system storage anymore. Depending on the model of your Android device, it’s also possible to use external storage as well. Just plug it into your device and select it in the “Download Location” menu.
Netflix in Your Language
Thanks to many language options Netflix provides, you’re able to switch languages quite easily on your Android device. Depending on the availability, you can change the app’s default language, as well as the language for subtitles and audio.
