How To Spell Check On Galaxy S8 And Galaxy S8 Plus
The Auto-correct on your Samsung Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8 Plus is the type of feature that you either love or hate. Some people find it useful and others think of it as a roadblock. The last ones are entitled to be annoyed by it, especially since the spell checker is known to offer wrong indications, on different occasions.
This article isn’t going to be about whether you should use the Auto-correct or not, but rather about your options. By options, we mean all sort of options, from disabling this feature, so you can type freely and without any kind of interruptions, to making it work for you, not against you, by adding words to its dictionary.
Let us start with the less radical solution, the one of teaching the Auto-correct what words to never correct for you again.
How to add words to your Auto-correct dictionary
One of the reasons why the Auto-correct is so annoying is the Auto replacement feature. When this feature is enabled, it won’t just detect words considered misspelled, but it will also automatically change those words into a form considered more appropriate, the moment you finished typing that word and you pressed the Space bar.
The good news is that you can avoid this from happening, by inserting that word into the dictionary. The process is surprisingly simple. All you have to do, when you see that a word was automatically corrected into another form, is to tap the corrected word and then choose the word that you typed in initially. The Auto-correct will register this as a preference of yours and next time when you’ll get to type the same word, it will remember your previous preference and keep it like that instead of correcting it.
As you can see, it only takes a little bit of patience and the more you text from you Galaxy S8, the easier the Auto-correct will learn your preferences and adjust to it.
How to completely turn off Auto-correct
If you’re not planning to give this feature a chance, the steps for turning it off aren’t very complicated either. All you have to do is to:
- Head to the Home screen and select Apps;
- From there, go to Settings and access the Language and Input section;
- Tap on the keyboard that you are currently using, which should be the Samsung keyboard;
- Look for the Smart Typing section, where you will have a list of features. You can disable all of them or only some of them:
- The predictive text – suggesting you words, right below the keyboard field, based on the letters you’re typing and the context;
- The auto replace – automatically changing the words you type with words that the app considers to be correct, the moment you press the space bar;
- The auto check spelling – underlining in red whatever it considers being a spelling error;
- The auto spacing – automatically inserting spaces where it detects two possible words without space in between;
- The auto punctuation – automatically inserting apostrophes or periods where it sees fit.
With all these aspects in mind, you can decide to give the Auto-correct on your Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8 Plus another chance or just get rid of it once and for all. Your call.
