Why is the Keyboard Small on My iPad?

Some iPad users have complained that their keyboard suddenly became so small. Although this may be an unpleasant issue, the good news is that it’s easily reversible. It only takes a couple of taps to get it back to normal.

If you still find it too small, maybe you should opt for an external keyboard. It can be very convenient for people who work on their iPads and those who have to write a lot.

What Happened to My Keyboard?

Your keyboard suddenly shrunk, and it’s tough to use. It’s even worse if you’re short-sighted or you have somewhat big fingers. Luckily, the small keyboard isn’t here to stay. You can change it in a couple of seconds.

But what happened, in the first place? Well, you’ve probably accidentally tapped on something and changed your settings. Whenever you pinch your keyboard with two fingers, it becomes smaller. Some people like this feature as it allows them to have better control over the keyboard or use it with only one hand. We’ll now explain how you can reverse it.

How to Make My Keyboard Bigger?

We’ll now explain the fastest and the easiest way to make your keyboard bigger. Here’s what you have to do:

  1. Place two fingers on the small floating keyboard.
  2. Spread your fingers as wide as you can.
  3. Keep them in that position until the keyboard is back to full size.

That’s it! The full-size keyboard should be big enough even for older people with poor eyesight. However, if you still struggle, you may consider buying an external one.

Why Is My Keyboard Separated?

Seeing the keyboard split into two parts can be strange, and you may be wondering what’s going on. Don’t worry as this is one of the most common issues iPad users experience.

In case you didn’t know, you can split your keyboard into two. Some people find it easier to use this way, while others find it too small and somewhat confusing. This option is there for people who type faster when they used both hands at the same time.

You might be wondering how did you manage to split your keyboard? It’s easier than you think! At the bottom right corner of your keyboard, there’s a button that looks like a small keyboard. You’ve probably been using it whenever you want to hide it and read something without distractions.

When you press that button and hold it, it separates the keyboard in two. If you want to reverse it, you should tap and hold the same button. That said, it can be somewhat tricky now that your keyboard is minimized.

After a couple of seconds, you’ll see a Dock and Merge sign. Tap on it, and your keyboard will go back to its standard size and position.

You can also split your keyboard by pulling it to the side of the screen. Many people unconsciously do it when they’re swiping or scrolling. You can use your thumbs to join two parts of the keyboard.

That’s it! Next time when this happens, you’ll know what to do.

Keyboard Settings

You can customize your keyboard in many ways and make it easier to use. Here’s the quickest way to open the Keyboard settings:

  1. Open the app that uses the keyboard, maybe your Notes.
  2. Tap and hold the small round button on your keyboard.
  3. Select Keyboard settings.

You can now customize anything you want. You’ll see a list of features you can enable or disable By sliding the green slider switch.

You can choose whether you want to have Auto-Correct, Caps Lock, automatic spelling and punctuation monitoring, and more. We recommend enabling these options as they can be a great help, especially if you’re in a rush or you can’t see what you’re typing.

However, if you use the same keyboard to write in English and some other language, a predictive keyboard can be an obstacle. It can create misunderstandings and funny situations. That’s one of the rare cases when we don’t suggest using this feature.

Install a Third-Party Keyboard

If you’re still not satisfied with your keyboard, there’s always an option to install a third-party keyboard. Although it may sound complicated, it’s just another app. You can open your App Store, type “keyboard,” and explore your options. There are many creative and helpful keyboards over there.

You can install one just as you’d install any other app. All you need to do is go to your Settings and enable it.

If you’re bored with your new keyboard, you can always disable it or even delete it.

  1. Go to the Settings.
  2. Tap on General.
  3. Tap on Keyboards.
  4. Press the Edit button.
  5. Tap a red minus sign next to the third-party keyboard you want to delete.

Customize It ‘Till You Like It

Many people aren’t aware of all the options they have on their iPad. They’re highly customizable and can offer a great user experience. We encourage you to explore all the possibilities alone or using tutorials.
