What is the Nest Hello Transformer Voltage?

If you want some extra security for your home, Google Nest Hello Doorbell can take on that task. You can connect it to your phone and monitor your front porch anytime and anywhere.

But how does the Next Hello work? Does it need power? The answer is yes, Nest Hello requires it, but it doesn’t use batteries.

That’s why you have to make sure your home meets the Nest Hello’s power requirements. In this article, we’ll talk about the correct transformer voltage for the Nest Hello and give you a few tips on how to check the transformer in your home.

Nest Hello Transformer Voltage Requirements

When you buy the Nest Hello Doorbell, you’ll then have to set it up. But that can prove to be a little bit complicated.

And how it goes will depend on several factors. First, did you have a doorbell before you bought the Nest, Hello? And if you have, when was the transformer installed?

In the US, only about 20% of households built before 1995 supply sufficient voltage for the Nest Hello. The power requirements for the bell is 16V-24V.

You’ll need to check your wire power voltage before you proceed. That means finding your doorbell transformer voltage first, which can be harder than it sounds.

If you don’t have a doorbell already, you’ll have to buy and install an indoor power adapter. That way, you’ll be able to plug the Nest Hello into a power outlet in your home.

Checking Your Transformer

If you have a transformer with enough voltage to support the Nest Hello, you’ll first have to find it. In most cases, it is near an electrical panel.

You might also find it in the attic or basement of your house or building. Other frequently used locations include a garage, utility room, or near a furnace room. Once you find it, you can check the voltage in several ways.

Use a Multimeter

A multimeter is a convenient device that can measure the electrical voltage. Some people also call it a volt-ohm meter. But you need to unscrew the lid with a screwdriver to access the transformer.

If the reading on your multimeter gives you anything between 16V-24V, that means you’re good to go. Your Nest Hello Doorbell will have enough power, and you can continue with the installation without worrying.

Look at the Transformer

A multimeter is a nice gadget, but what if you don’t have one at home? In most cases, you’ll be able to visually assess the transformer and figure out if it will have enough power to support your Nest Hello.

You’ll probably be able to see the reading on the front of the transformer, around the wires. If it says 10V, for example, that means your Nest Hello won’t be able to work.

In that case, you’ll need to replace the doorbell transformer you’re currently using with a new one that is compatible with your smart doorbell. It’s probably best to go with a 24V transformer which will give you more in terms of durability.

Find Out by Installing the Nest Hello

It might seem like bad advice, but if you’re stuck and don’t have any other solutions, you can always try installing your Hello doorbell. If you can’t find your transformer, that’s the only way to be sure.

But often, even if you do find it, the voltage engraving is impossible to read. So, go ahead and install your Nest Hello and see if it will work. If it does, then great, problem solved. However, if there is no reaction and no power indication, that means you’ll have to replace the transformer.

The only concern here is that your transformer is too strong for the Nest Hello. That might be the case, but chances are meager. Most of the already installed doorbells don’t need too much power.

It Is more likely, however, that your current transformer has the required voltage or that it is underpowered.

But to be on the safe side, in case you can’t determine the voltage, it’s best to call a professional electrician.
