How to Prevent Your Ring Doorbell from Getting Stolen
Ring Doorbell is a security doorbell device that brings live video feed from your front door to your smartphone device – wherever you are. It also allows you to communicate with your visitors, which is an added security feature, in itself. However, how can you make sure that your Ring Doorbell doesn’t get stolen? Well, this is somewhat of a meta-question, but it’s actually a very good one.
Don’t Ignore the Notifications
The number one thing you can do to ensure that your Ring Doorbell is safe is take a look at the phone every time the motion sensor gets triggered. All Ring Doorbell devices come equipped with a motion sensor that sends a notification to your phone each time someone enters your selected sensor zone.
Ring Doorbell devices take some time to install. Depending on the model, they can take as much as five to sixty minutes to properly set up. Even five minutes is enough to take a look at the Ring app and use your own voice to scare the thief away.
Alternatively, even though there are only thirty seconds of automatic recording time, you can always record your screen while viewing the live feed from your Ring camera and go to the authorities to find the culprit. Keep in mind that most thieves will try and cut the power cord in order to maintain their anonymity. Most Ring Doorbell models are battery-operated, which will further confuse the perpetrator.
This may be the most primitive way of preventing the Ring Doorbell device from getting stolen, but it may work as a last resort.
Get a Grid Box
Again, this may sound primitive, but it is effective. If you choose a small metal box and make sure that the grids are smaller than your doorbell, you can prevent the device’s theft, while not compromising the actual view from the camera.
Owing to the fact that Ring Doorbell devices feature a 180-degree camera, make sure that you fix it so that the ring button and the camera itself are placed directly against the front-most part of the grid box. This will make it easier for your visitors to ring the doorbell, whilst not compromising the camera view.
You can always go DIY with the grid box, but there are plenty of these available on websites such as eBay, Amazon, etc.
Attach a Sign
Being a thief is a risky business, and they know it. They do tend to get scared easily and are overly cautious. Consider getting an official-looking sign that reads something like: “this doorbell is wired to an alarm and features a motion sensor”. This should be enough to deter the thief from messing with the device. Oh, and the second part of the example sign is actually true. The motion sensor on Ring devices works impeccably.
Attach the Doorbell to the Stucco
One of the most simple, straightforward, and logical ways to secure your Ring Doorbell device is to make it nearly impossible for the thief to rip. Instead of using the permanent tape or similar solutions, use the provided screws to firmly attach the doorbell to the stucco. This may take some effort, but the more time it takes for you to install it, the more difficult it will be for the thief to simply rip it from the wall.
As a general rule of thumb, thieves are all about acting fast. If a thief notices that figuring out how to steal your Ring Doorbell is taking too long, they’ll likely just give up and go look for an easier target.
The Protective Hard Case
Ring offers a protective hard case accessory that is essentially much more difficult to rip out of the wall. The Ring Doorbell is than placed inside the hard case, screwed in in the exact same way as without the hard case. This protects your Ring Doorbell device from damage, weather conditions, and, most importantly here, theft. The thief would have to find a way to pry open the hard case and then somehow proceed to steal the Ring Doorbell device. This is a solid safety guarantee.
Keep Your Eyes Peeled
Whatever theft prevention method you decide to go with, one thing is for certain – the Ring Doorbell is a security device that can be used to scare the thief off. Just make sure that you pay attention to all motion detector notifications and use your own voice to scare the culprit away. Every other security measure is a bit of extra protection for your device.
What security measure did you choose? Did you go with multiple ones? Have you ever seen a thief trying to steal the Ring Doorbell while you’re looking at him/her through the camera? Share your thoughts, tips, and experiences in the comments section below.
