Can the Ring Doorbell Get Wet?
Ring provides some of the most advanced doorbell devices out there. The whole idea is being able to use them as intercoms, providing video feed and the ability to communicate with your visitors. What sets Ring Doorbell devices apart from a typical intercom is the fact that everything is accessible through your smartphone. This means that you can watch and communicate with whoever is at your door from anywhere, even when you’re away from home.
As an outdoor device, Ring Doorbell is expected to be exposed to various weather conditions, but can it withstand heavy rain?
Can It Get Wet?
To put it bluntly, yes. Ring Doorbell devices are built with weather conditions in mind. As such, they should be able to withstand the rainy weather conditions. However, despite Ring being designed to resist rainwater, as well as freezing temperatures, submerging the device in water isn’t recommended. This means that the Ring Doorbell might be water-resistant, but it’s definitely not waterproof.
This may cause some doubt with future users, but there are some tweaks you can do in order to make sure that your Ring Doorbell survives extreme weather conditions.
Ring vs. the Elements
According to the manufacturer, the Ring Doorbell can withstand rainwater and temperatures of -5 up to 120F. This is more than decent and makes this doorbell device solidly resistant. However, despite advertising the materials and parts of the device as waterproof, the manufacturer still recommends against intentionally exposing it to too much water on a regular basis.
But what if you live in a location that gets a lot of seasonal rain? Well, here’s what you can do to make sure that your device remains safe, even in the worst weather conditions.
The Weather Blocking Mount
The Ring Doorbell devices are mounted to walls by taping or screwing in a mount plate. Then, the actual Ring device is attached to it. By default, this mount is nothing but a simple plate. However, Ring offers the Weather Blocking Mount that protects your Ring device from rain and too much sun. This mount is an excellent solution for heavy weather conditions and is easy to install and use.
Ring Doorbell Cover
Although the above-mentioned mount is a great solution for certain rain conditions, it won’t be much help in freak downpours. The water will get to the Ring device and if there’s too much of it, the device may break. In this case, the best solution would be to use the Ring Doorbell Cover. Essentially, this is a casing for your doorbell device that protects it from rain, as well as from low temperatures and damage.
The downside here, however, is that you’re going to have to remove the cover first, in order to get access to Ring’s faceplate, which you need to remove in order to further access the device’s battery to recharge or replace it.
Alternative Materials
The final option is a bit of a DIY thing. An acrylic or a clear silicone material can be used to cover all small gaps. This should be enough to prevent the rain from incoming into contact with Ring Doorbell’s circuit board. Essentially, this should make the device waterproof. However, this tweak is best used as an added bonus to using the above-mentioned cover.
Thinking Outside the Box
It may sound like too much, but have you thought about installing a cover above your front door? The Ring device in question might not be an ideal reason for doing so, but by installing the door cover, you’re protecting your front porch from getting wet.
Alternatively, you could remove the Ring Doorbell every time it rains heavily, but taking it off takes quite some time, so it might not be ideal to do so while it’s raining cats and dogs out there.
Ensuring the Ring Doorbell Stays Dry
These are pretty much the only solutions that you have when it comes to protecting the Ring Doorbell from rain. Using a combination of the cover and adding some protective materials to make the device waterproof is the best way to go. However, if your area doesn’t get a lot of rain during the year, consider going with the Weather Blocking Mount.
