Is the Samsung A20 Waterproof?

What is the one true nemesis of technology? Liquid. It doesn’t matter how sophisticated your gadget is, if it comes in contact with water, it’s game over. Have more phones died by being dropped on the ground or in the kitchen sink? With a cracked screen, you might still use your phone, though.

Tech companies, including Samsung, are aware of this. They know that figuring out this issue can be a major selling point. There is no such thing as a waterproof phone. Not yet, anyway. But newer models have water-resistant features. Is Samsung Galaxy A20 one of them?

Waterproof vs Water-resistant

It’s essential to understand what the term waterproof means and how it relates to your phone. Waterproof means that an object is impervious to water. When a tech company uses this term, what they mean is that their phone, or another device, is water-resistant. Though similar, these things are not the same.

If something, like a smartphone, is water-resistant, it doesn’t mean that water or another liquid can’t get inside. It does mean that it will take longer. Or it could be that the device has a protective coating that makes it harder for liquids to get in. When it comes to smartphones, this water-resistant feature is as far as it goes in terms of avoiding water damage.

Samsung A20 is not waterproof, nor is it water-resistant, unfortunately. Only a few phones from Samsung’s catalog come with the IP68 rating that means they can withstand more than rain, sweat, accidental spills, or drops in the snow. They can be submerged or soaked in 5 feet of water up to 30 minutes.

But even these features come with caveats. Te IP68 badge doesn’t cover ocean water, and it only applies if the phone is brand new and undamaged. That is why the warranty doesn’t cover water damage, even with the IP68 certification.

Samsung A20 doesn’t have it. It’s Samsung Galaxy 9 and Samsung Galaxy 10 that have the IP68 rating. Therefore, accidental drops in the pool or the toilet don’t mean you’ll get a new A20.

What to Do If Your Samsung A20 Gets Wet?

Since Samsung A20 isn’t water-resistant, you should take extra care of your lovely new phone. However, sometimes moisture finds its way in, and you could end up seeing the “Moisture Detected” warning.

That happens when there’s water in the charging port. In case your phone is plugged into the charger, it will momentarily stop charging. That’s to prevent the liquid from further damaging your phone. Before you go back to charge your Samsung A20, try doing some of these things.

Clean the Charging Port

Before you start cleaning the charging port, make sure to turn off your phone completely. That way, you’ll reduce the potential for any complications if there is moisture in the port. Then proceed to:

  1. Take a tissue and clean the charging port. Leave it there for a few minutes. You can do this several times.
  2. Try using a compressed air source to blow out any dust or dry out moisture.

Check the Phone for Liquid Damage

The moisture sensor detects water damage in the charging port only, but that doesn’t mean that there’s no damage to the rest of the phone. If your A20 got substantially wet, then you should probably check its Liquid Damage Indicator (LDI). Go ahead and:

  1. Eject the SIM card tray.
  2. Inspect the SIM card slot. You can use a flashlight.
  3. If your phone got wet, the LDI would be pink, or even red. If there is no liquid damage, it will be white.

If your phone’s LDI is pink or red, this means you need to take it to the official Samsung store and see what they can do to save it.

How to Protect Your Phone from Liquids?

The last thing anyone needs is for their new phone to suffer water damage. There’s no need to be paranoid about it, but some vigilance won’t hurt. Here are some things you can do and avoid doing to make sure your phone doesn’t get wet.

Don’t take it with you to the beach. Saltwater is bad for your phone. Most water-resistant phones have only been tested with lab-stable fresh water anyway.

If your phone does get wet, don’t rush to charge it. Make sure it’s dry first.

Resist pressing any buttons on your phone when it gets wet. The water could seep in.

Resist the Water

Even if Samsung A20 were water-resistant, keeping it away from liquids would be a good idea. That is only an added feature for those who tend to drop their phones in the water often. That doesn’t mean you can go swimming with your smartphone in hand.

However, A20 can’t handle a lot of moisture. If some water does get in, there are measures you can take to rescue it. In any case, keep your phone safe and away from water.
