The Best Rabb.it Alternatives [April 2020]

Rabb.it was the go-to place for many movie and TV show aficionados. It brought something new to the table – the ability to watch video content without actually sitting in the same room. Rabb.it featured a chatroom option that allowed you to communicate with participant watchers in real-time.

Unfortunately, Rabb.it got acquired by Kast after the service shut down back in 2019. There were no questions of legality – the investors simply pulled their money. That left a gaping hole in the entertainment aspect of many people’s lives. They were all on a lookout for an alternative. Well, it turns out that you can find many options these days.

Top Rabb.it Alternatives

Kast

As mentioned earlier, Kast is Rabb.it’s successor. It’s a desktop-based app for Mac and Windows devices. You can also run it using a web browser.

With Kast, you can chat using video, voice, and text. You can also host movie/TV show watching parties for as many as 100 participants. Oh, you can also play video games in real-time here.

Kast doesn’t bring all the options to the table that Rabb.it used to, but it’s still more than a decent replacement and stream-watching app.

Watch2gether

Watch2gether won’t help you watch all the hot movies and TV shows. However, it is one of the prime online sync-watching apps for platforms like Amazon, YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, and Dailymotion. It allows you to listen to music with your friends via SoundCloud. If you and your friends and family are into Twitch streams, you guessed it, Watch2gether enables you to watch these as well.

With Watch2gether, every user can search for videos and play them, unlike the case was with Rabb.it. You also don’t have to log into third-party accounts. Unfortunately, this means that you cannot access subscription services like Netflix, Hulu, and HBO Go.

TogetherTube

TogetherTube works with Dailymotion, YouTube, SoundCloud, and Vimeo. As long as your group is okay with having only these four platforms on the menu, TogetherTube is a great Rabb.it alternative.

The cool thing about TogetherTube, however, is that you can create public, as well as private chat rooms. Every user can add videos from supported platforms to the group playlist. So, how do you avoid chaos? Well, the users have to vote on each video before it gets added. The more votes a video has, the more it’s moved up the queue.

There are also various chat room settings included. As an admin, you can also restrict others from voting.

Togethr TV

Togethr TV allows synced video playback using a simple online interface. What’s so special about Togethr TV is that it is a rare Rabb.it alternative, which you can use to stream Hulu, Netflix, and other paid content.

It doesn’t prompt you to share your login information. It’s as simple as sharing your remote desktop screen via your web browser. This platform also allows you to stream music and video files directly from your desktop device.

There’s an audio chat option, as long as a user has a microphone. Finally, yes, the service is entirely free.

AndChill

AndChill uses the popular “Netflix and Chill” term to paint the picture of a service that allows you to watch any video content with other people, wherever they are around the world. The user interface is as simple as they come, and you’re always one click away from sharing videos.

When you enter the website for the first time, you’ll be able to browse a list of currently active chat rooms. You can join these chat rooms or use AndChill to watch content with your friends and family.

Netflix Party

It’s no surprise that Netflix has joined the shared stream-watching game. After all, streaming is Netflix’s bread and butter (and vice-versa). They’ve come up with Netflix Party, a free official Chrome extension that lets the platform’s subscribers watch the platform’s content together.

All members of your group need to install the extension on their devices and log in to Netflix. Then, create your Netflix Party and invite your friends. The video that’s played is synced, and the users can chat in real-time.

Unfortunately, Netflix Party doesn’t work with other streaming platforms, nor is it able to stream your local content.

Although this platform isn’t nearly as lucrative as Rabb.it was, it is one of the rare options that allow you to enjoy synchronized Netflix shows with your friends and family.

Synaptop

Synaptop is a chat service first, and video sync-watching service second. It’s free to use, but you’ll have to create an account to use it.

Synaptop is an entire remote desktop experience. After you’ve created an account and signed in, you essentially add web apps to Synaptop to do various things. These activities range from playing video games and watching videos to listening to music and participating in collaboration and work projects.

The whole experience is entirely web-based. That’s great because it means that you don’t have to download anything.

And now, for the one drawback – there’s a list of available movie titles on the website, and those are the only ones that you can watch using the platform.

Syncplay

Syncplay is as simple as they come – you download the program to your computer. Then, your friends/family members download and install the software.

Upon launching the Syncplay application, you’ll see a media center that will sync between the users. Using this app, you can play video and music files from your computer and stay synced with others.

There is no mobile version of this app, although the software is available for MS Windows, Linux, and macOS. Finally, it’s completely free and supports every video format.

Sync-Watching Apps Are Great

Although we all miss Rabb.it, you’ll be happy to learn that there are many alternatives currently available online. Every single one of the listed services has its unique benefits and upshots. If you’re into synced streaming, you should give a couple of these a go.

Which of these apps have you tried? Did you settle for one of them? Which one and why? Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comment section below.
