The Netherlands Had It First
The Netherlands has the distinction of being the first country to experience the Disney Plus service. Even before it was launched in the US and Canada, Disney decided to give the Dutch a taste for free. From September until the official launch day, November 12, Dutch users got to use Disney Plus for free, no strings attached. However, it was a truncated version of the service with a lot of the content removed.
The reasons why are not complicated, but they are pretty extensive. Suffice it to say that the Netherlands is basically the perfect focus group for a service like Disney Plus. It’s a densely populated country with the best internet coverage in the world and a population small enough that there was no chance of overloading the servers.
It also has a very large proportion of English speakers and very few licensing conflicts, so it makes for a great place to see how an international audience will respond.
Other countries slated to receive Disney Plus soon are Australia and New Zealand on November 19.
How to Watch Disney Plus in the Netherlands After the Launch
Unfortunately for Dutch users, the free trial is over at this point. But the good news is that the service is still available in the Netherlands. As of this writing, it holds the prestigious position of only three countries to have Disney Plus readily available.
For users that created accounts during the free trial, it will be a matter of upgrading their free account to a paid account to continue using the service. For users that never had an account, they’ll have to create one on the official Disney Plus website. A subscription can also be obtained via in-app purchase from the Disney Plus app on iOS and Android devices.
On the day it was officially launched, all the locked Disney Plus content has been made available in the Netherlands. So, Dutch users will get all the same content as American users with their subscription. The price for a Disney Plus subscription in the Netherlands is 7 euros per month or 70 euros for 12 months.
What About Disney Plus Bundles?
Disney Plus is available as a bundle with ESPN Plus and Hulu for $12.99, a fantastic deal, considering this is still less than a standard Netflix subscription. Unfortunately, this bundle is currently only available for users in the US. Disney is allegedly working on other bundles as well and those might be rolling out internationally in the upcoming months.
Why Get Disney Plus?
Disney’s streaming service is a great value proposition. Even at launch, it was home to a massive amount of content ranging from Disney’s earliest films and all the way to the most recent blockbusters. A few titles from the Avengers and Star Wars franchises are still missing, as they’re currently tied up in licensing contracts with other providers. However, those will soon make it to Disney Plus as well.
Disney really seems to want to give all their big releases a home with Disney Plus and on that basis alone, it’s more than worth the current asking price. Disney’s also ramping up production of its own shows that will be exclusive to Disney Plus, so it’s only going to get better in the future.
On top of all that, the service allows the users to stream on up to four different devices simultaneously. Password sharing is currently not a problem with Disney, although that might change in the future.
Disney Plus For the Dutch
The Netherlands had the honor of getting Disney Plus ahead of everyone else. The country was the perfect testing arena for the service and it worked out great for both Disney and the Dutch. As of the global launch on November 12, Disney Plus is available in the Netherlands as normal, though it’s no longer free. Dutch users can set up their account from the Disney Plus website or through their preferred streaming devices.
