Will DoorDash Hire Felons?
Whether a person was convicted of a minor or major felony, they may find it challenging to get a job once they’ve done time. They face challenges in every aspect of life, but finding a way to provide for themselves or their family may be the toughest one of all.
Many companies won’t even consider giving them a chance. Still, there are restaurants dedicated to this particular cause: help an ex-convict to integrate back into society.
Is DoorDash one of these restaurants? Read this article to find out.
DoorDash and Their Hiring Policy
Many employers run a background check before they offer you a job. What’s the situation with DoorDash?
DoorDash is currently available in Canada and the US. This app lets you order food that’s then delivered right to your doorstep. How? A restaurant’s staff processes and prepares your order, and then the driver closest to the restaurant picks it up and delivers it straight to you.
This means that you need to have a vehicle and a smartphone to qualify for this job. But does having a criminal record disqualify you?
Fortunately, it doesn’t. At least if you haven’t had any criminal charges or arrests that led to a conviction in the last seven years. The DoorDash staff runs a background check on you if you get the preliminary job approval. This happens with your permission, so you’ll know what to expect.
Some violations DoorDash doesn’t tolerate are driving under the influence, not stopping to report an accident, or driving without a license or with a suspended one. Also, you shouldn’t have had over three ‘incidents’ in the past three years – incident meaning participating in an accident.
Note that you have the right to dispute the report if there’s an error, especially one that disqualified you from getting the job.
What Are Other Requirements for a Job at DoorDash?
To work for DoorDash, or become a Dasher, as they’re usually called, you need to be at least 18 years old and own your own vehicle. It doesn’t have to be a car necessarily, because you can also drive a scooter, motorcycle, or bicycle. Some cities even allow you to deliver orders on foot if you don’t have access to a vehicle.
Note that your vehicle needs to have insurance in your name, not your parents’ or your partner’s. However, the vehicle doesn’t need to meet any cosmetic requirements, and any model qualifies. You also need to have a valid driver’s license and a smartphone because you’ll need access to a map and a way to contact your customers. Prior experience isn’t required, except for the two-year driving experience.
How to Apply for a Job at DoorDash?
If you’re interested in applying for a job at DoorDash, here’s how to do it:
- Go to the DoorDash’s official website and submit your application.
- Choose your driver orientation. This typically needs to be in person, but you can also ask for an Activation Kit, which happens after your background check is done. This orientation includes instructions that help you understand your job, learn how to use the app, and schedule your working hours.
- Your sign-up is now complete, and you’re ready to download the app and get started.
What if you have submitted your application, but you haven’t heard back from DoorDash in two weeks? Check your application status by clicking on Already started signing up? on the application page of their website.
What Are the Benefits of Working for DoorDash?
The mentioned hiring policy and DoorDash’s willingness to give you a second chance may be a reason good enough for you to apply. If you want to know what other benefits are, here are some of them.
You’re free to choose your working hours, so this job can provide extra income if you’re already working somewhere else. You can work anywhere where DoorDash service is available, and you’re not limited to one city. It’s easy to apply, and the app lets you know exactly how much you can earn from each order.
A Second Chance for Your Career
To summarize all of this – your application to become a Dasher probably won’t be rejected if your felony happened more than seven years ago. The same goes if you haven’t been involved in a traffic accident, or had a moving violation in the past three years. The latter includes anything related to driving, even a speeding ticket.
DoorDash requirements are relatively basic, so almost anyone with a vehicle qualifies. The application process is easy, so no need to wait to get a job.

Until I read a bunch of reddit posts of people going through a bunch of nonsense crap because of the background check, and other difficulties involving the work.
After reading about stuff going on with this company, realized maybe not getting the job was only best interest.
